Price Dispersion Within and Across Stores in a Comparison site

چکیده

The paper extends the information gatekeeper model of Baye and Morgan(2001) to allow for different levels of store service quality ratings, which are usually observable with the store product prices in the comparison site. The stores use mixed pricing strategies in equilibrium. In particular, higher service quality stores tend to price higher and lower service quality stores tend to price lower in the comparison site. In addition, the monopoly gatekeeper would either charge a click-through fee or a listing fee to maximize profits. In N=2 duopoly case, listing fee only is optimal when shoppers are few and click-through fee only is optimal when the size of shoppers gets larger. I would like to thank my committee members: Professor Michael Baye, Professor Michael Rauh and Professor Roy Gardner for their guidance, helpful comments and encouragements.

Equilibrium Price Dispersion Across and Within Stores∗

We develop a search-theoretic model of the product market that generates price dispersion across and within stores. Buyers differ with respect to their ability to shop around, both at different stores and at different times. The fact that some buyers can shop from only one seller while others can shop from multiple sellers causes price dispersion across stores. The fact that the buyers who can ...

Price Dispersion in the Grocery Market

The proverbial “law of one price” is virtually never empirically valid. Homogeneous goods are often sold at widely different prices by rival firms, even in environments that seem particularly conducive to economic competition. And prices for the same goods often vary over time. The grocery market seems to be one of the prime examples of price dispersion in which there exists price uncertainty. ...

Price Dispersion Within and Across Retailers at a Comparison Site

Price data from comparison sites are easy to obtain from the internet, providing ample opportunities to analyze theories on price dispersion empirically. We propose a generalized analytical model that generates heterogenous mixed pricing strategies. Making seller service ratings public on comparison site leads to price di¤erence because of vertical product di¤erentiation. Furthermore, we show t...

An Empirical Investigation of Online Competitive Price Promotions

Using daily price data collected from a leading price comparison website, this paper empirically examines the role of vertical store differentiation on firms’ equilibrium pricing strategies in a clearinghouse model. By allowing for different quality levels across firms the theoretical model used for estimation generates asymmetric pricing strategies. Our estimates show that observable store eff...
